Spring is right around the corner here in Calgary and my daily diet is changing as the season begins to turn.
It is hard to resist all the fabulous, fresh, new greens that are in the farmers market and in the refrigerators at the store. Where I relied and even craved the comforting flavours of pumpkin, butternut squash and sweet potato throughout the winter my palate is opening up to citrusy-fresh and bitter-green flavours for the spring.
I can’t get enough of this green smoothie as it includes the first of this seasons locally grown kale from Hotchkiss Farm and a big handful of delicious fresh cilantro. I also feel so damn good after guzzling one down with a burst of green powered energy and clarity! It is also helping me with my daily detox….yep it will help you to poop on the daily!
Rich in Vitamin C with lime juice and freshly chopped pineapple, this smoothie is alkalizing and rich in bone building calcium.
Hemp seeds have been added to boost the protein content and are also rich in anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids….as is kale! I also added the superfoods spirulina and chia seeds to this blend to boost the mineral, protein and anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acid content. This is a serving of dense but easily digested nutrition for your body.
Fibre rich pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain which supports and aids digestion so that all of the goodness in this smoothie will be easily absorbed by the body.

- 1/2 Pineapple peeled and diced
- 1/4 English cucumber chopped
- 2 kale leaves stalks removed
- 1/2 bunch cilantro
- 1 lime juiced
- 1/2 tsp spirulina
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 cup water
- Add all of the ingredients to a high powered blender and blend until smooth
