Decadent Chocolate Hemp Spread

After a long Calgary winter, it is strawberry season at last and I just can’t get enough of pairing the juicy package of vitamin C with this clean and delicious Chocolate Spread. 

With only 5 ingredients this is not your fake food Nutellery blend of sugar, milk solids, artificial flavour and modified palm oil but a delicious emulsion of whole foods that are all fantastically nutritious for the body.

Let’s start with Raw Cacao: packed with cardio-vascular system supporting polyphenols and antioxidants it works to support a healthy heart and vascular system. Raw Cacao is also anti-cancerous and has a powerful effect on the brain by increasing levels of serotonin, our happy neurotransmitter. Remember, if you are protecting your cardiovascular system you are also protecting the tiny capillaries of the brain from risk of stroke, so that is a double dose of chocolate love for your precious thinking machine. Raw Cacoa also contains important minerals including iron and magnesium and vitamins from the B group that support mental health end energy production at a cellular level. What’s not to love!

Raw Hemp Hearts provide fibre, easily digestible amino acids which amp up the protein content of the spread and are also a good source of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids, the healthy fats that are beneficial for you if you have high cholesterol and a lipid profile that makes your doctor frown in concern.

Coconut Oil is made up of medium chain fatty acids which are preferred by the body and are chosen first for energy from the food that you eat. This mean that whilst this oil will satiate hunger pangs, will not spike blood sugar and will keep you feeling full for longer it will not contribute to weight gain. Coconut Oil has been shown in some studies to promote the loss of belly fat. Again it is also fabulous brain food.

Local Honey provides sweetness and if you use honey from the bees in your area you not only support your local farmers but may also reduce seasonal allergies as your body becomes de-sensitized to the plants and the pollens in your locality.

Himalayan Sea Salt brings all of the flavours together and adds mineral content including iodine to support the thyroid gland and an additional frisson to the tongue.

I love chocolate and in my murky past I have LOVED sugar laden Nutella, so I am deliriously happy to find a chocolate spread I can feel good about including in my diet and that of my kids. No wonder I am addicted!

  1. 1/4 cup hemp hearts
  2. 1/4 cup coconut Oil
  3. 1/3 cup raw cacao
  4. 2 tbsp local honey
  5. pinch Himalayan sea salt
  1. Blend all ingredients together until a smooth spread is formed.
