Coffee Replacement Chocolate Morning Drink

One of the areas where I get most push back from my clients is when I suggest that just maybe it would be a good idea to take break from coffee……and I get it. I was addicted to caffeine for year and used it as my main energy source throughout the day.

So awesome! It is a Teasmade (I’m British so tea totally does it for me too on the caffeine front!) It’s like an alarm clock that also makes you tea in the morning. I hankered after one of these for years because then I could have had my first caffeine hit before I got out of bed in the morning. That first caffeine hit would have fired me up to start my day with my three toddlers feeling full of energy.

I took my next caffeine shot was while I packed the lunch boxes in the kitchen when I got to play with my new expresso machine, then it was everyone into the mini-van and through the Starbucks drive through on the way to school followed by, phew! my first sit down of the day at 11am when I would finally find time to grab a coffee!

You get the picture. I rode on caffeine throughout the day!

Little did I know at the time that I was severely depleting my adrenal glands and that coffee for me was like whipping an already exhausted horse. My body had nothing left to offer me. Caffeine was disrupting my sleep at night leaving me wakeful and anxious at 3am but exhausted at 7am when it was time to get up. Caffeine was depleting my levels of the relaxation mineral magnesium giving me restless leg syndrome and damaging the integrity of my bones. Caffeine also depleted the vitamin B group from my body making me feel even more tired and mentally frazzled and caffeine elevated the stress hormone cortisol in my body so that I felt anxious and often stressed out and blue.

It was only when I decided to get serious about healing my adrenal glands that I began to contemplate the unthinkable…giving up the caffeine!

Things have certainly come around for me now and I have applied one of my favourite mottos to my caffeine addiction and morning drink:

Add into your diet the foods which nurture your body and squeeze out the foods that harm you!

Lets run through the list of ingredients in this coffee substitute!


1.Hemp seeds that provide an easily absorbable plant based protein, anti-oxidants and omega 3 essential fatty acids.

2.Raw cacao that is rich in the minerals magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, copper and manganese. Raw cacao also contain anti-oxidants that protect the body from cardiovascular disease and can cross the blood brain barrier to protect your nervous system. Cacao has been shown in clinical trail to boost levels of our happy hormone, serotonin,in the brain.

3. Coconut oil, a healthy fat made up of medium chain fatty acids that fuel and protect the brain and help to reduce anxiety.

4.Dates for sweetness that are rich in the mineral iron and the cardio-protective, energy boosting and nervous system supportive B group of vitamins.

This beverage is perfect as a vehicle for other health promoting ingredients and i have given lots of options for you to play around with to find what suits your health and body best.

Just at the moment I am including Maca Root for it’s hormone balancing properties, particularly it’s libido resurrecting properties (need I say more ;)) In the winter I enjoy adding the medicinal mushroom Chaga to boost immunity. Vanity is encouraging me to experiment with added collagen for great looking skin and as it supports healthy joints as we age. Cinnamon helps to regulate blood sugar levels, turmeric and ginger are both anti-inflammatory and all of these spices add a unique flavour to this morning drink that you might enjoy. I love the warming waste of a ginger chocolate drink in the winter.

Just put the first six ingredients into a blender and whizz until smooth and creamy. Then add in other nutritional ingredients and funky spices as desired.

Coffee substitute, caffeine free

I love making a big batch of this beverage weekly to decant into mason jars…..and here it is right in my refrigerator ready to pull out and reheat on the daily!

What is important is that I still enjoy the habit of  a delicious warm morning beverage, only now I feel good about nurturing my body, about feeling less anxious and sleeping better and confident that I am no longer depleting my energy stores and adrenal glands. Feels good!

  1. 4tbsp raw cacao
  2. 4tbsp hemp seeds
  3. 2 tbsp coconut oil
  4. 4 dates
  5. 1pinch sea salt
  6. 4 cups boiled water
  7. 2 tsp Gelatinized Maca Root (optional)
  8. 2 tbsp Collagen (optional)
  9. 1 tsp Chaga Mushroom (optional)
  10. 1/4 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  11. 1/4 tsp ground turmeric (optional)
  12. 1/4' fresh ginger (optional)
  1. Add all the ingredients into a vented blender and blend until silky smooth.
  2. Decant into mason jars and cool.
  3. Top with lid and refrigerate until required daily.
